Why sharpness matters

Sharpness is what separates dancers who know the moves from dancers who own them. Hits that stop dead, isolations that arrive all at once, accents that punch exactly when the snare does — these read as mastery because they are hard to fake.

Sharpness is also where musicality becomes visible at the smallest scale. The music's accents are sudden; if your body's accents are gradual, the two never quite meet, and the take feels vaguely "soft" in a way most dancers can't self-diagnose in a mirror.

How Danzu scores sharpness

Danzu measures the suddenness of your movement — how abruptly your joints accelerate — and compares it on the beat versus between beats. A high score means your explosive moments concentrate exactly where the music puts its accents; movement that is equally smooth (or equally frantic) everywhere scores lower, because nothing snaps.

Film the same eight counts under consistent conditions and review how clearly your accents start and stop. Pose tracking, camera motion and scorer updates can affect sharpness measurements; compare the video as well as the number.

How to improve your sharpness

Sharpness is built with stop-control and contrast drills:

• Freeze drills: dance freely, then stop dead on every 8th beat and hold for two counts without drifting.
• Practice hits at half speed — slow reveals whether a move truly stops or just decelerates.
• Alternate textures on purpose: one phrase danced maximally sharp, the next deliberately smooth. The contrast teaches your body the difference.
• Strengthen your core — a hit stops in the torso first; arms alone can't brake a movement cleanly.

Common sharpness mistakes

Low sharpness scores usually trace back to one of these habits:

• Decelerating instead of stopping. The move slows to a stop over a quarter beat instead of hitting one — invisible in the mirror, obvious on video.
• Constant intensity. If every count is attacked equally hard, no single moment reads as an accent — sharpness needs quiet around the hit.
• Arms-only hits. The wrists snap while the torso keeps drifting, so the accent reads soft from any distance.
• Locking joints instead of stabilizing. Rigidity looks sharp for one count, then reads as stiffness — a real hit lands and stays springy.

Sharpness vs timing

Timing asks whether your accents land on the beat; sharpness asks whether they are accents at all. A dancer can land every hit exactly on time and still score low on sharpness because the hits don't snap — and a dancer with knife-edge hits can put them in the wrong place. Danzu scores the two separately because the fixes are different: one is an ear problem, the other a body problem.
